Global Market Analysis

Global Market Analysis

Biotechnology is a highly interdisciplinary field that combines biological sciences with engineering technologies to manipulate living organisms and biological systems to produce products that advances healthcare, medicine, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals and environment control.

In recent years, the biotechnology industry has been defined by a number of mergers and acquisitions as well as several companies going public. Biotechnology draws from Bio molecular and cellular processes to formulate products ranging from drugs to industrial enzymes. The global biotechnology industry currently features over 250 products for healthcare alone. Likewise, biotechnology also increasingly finds uses in the agriculture sector to protect crops against pests and insects. The use of biotechnology in formulating new grades of bio-based fuels is currently an area witnessing considerable attention

The global biotechnology market is expected to reach USD 727.1 billion by 2025. The emergence of certain key themes in the biotechnology market is expected to drive growth in this industry to a lucrative extent.

These key themes include regenerative medicine and genetics in diagnostics. Presence of a plethora of companies focusing on the development of regenerative therapies is anticipated to drive sector growth by 2025. Technological advancements pertaining to the penetration of artificial intelligence in this industry is expected to fuel progress with potential avenues. The companies are engaged in unleashing machine learning in order to understand individual cancer cases, while recommending clinical trials.

Industry Insights

Industry in the European:

The biotech industry in Europe spends nearly $7.32 billion in R&D and $23.2 billion in revenue. Around 20% of the total marketed medicines, and as much as 50% of all drugs that are in the pipeline, are all healthcare biotech products. The European biotech industry provides employment to approximately 95,000 people.

European nations with maximum number of biotech firms include France, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The amount of biotech firms almost doubled in the mid-90s. As per an EC report, past few years have been characterized by consolidation instead of growth and that during the period from 2001-2003, employment rate dropped by as much as 4%.

France: France has the fourth largest biotech industry in Europe. Over the past couple of decades, France has made incredible progress in the biotech industry. With more than 300 biotech firms and over 600 biotech service and support companies, France offers a favorable investment climate to companies planning to invest in the biotech sector. France boasts of a distinctly diversified industrial base. The French biotech industry employs approximately 6,000 people, more than 50% of whom are involved in R&D activities. France also provides the foreign investors a favorable environment for partnerships. In addition, France boasts of a broad range of support mechanisms and programs available in the field of biotech. Biotech firms in France are eligible for several innovation support measures, including the innovative new companies’ scheme (Jeunes Entreprises Innovantes or JEI) and Research Tax Credit (Credit d’Impot Recherche or CIR).

North America North America dominated the overall market in terms of revenue in 2016 at 44.15%. Presence of high R&D investments pertaining to new drug discovery and development are some factors attributing to its large share. The U.S. spends more per capita on healthcare than other countries and has a high growth rate amongst other countries. According to the estimates published by OECD Health Statistics in 2014, it has been estimated that in 2012, U.S. spent nearly 16.9% of its GDP towards healthcare expenditure, which is the highest. The aforementioned fact supports the estimated share of biotechnology market.

Asia Pacific: Asia Pacific on the other hand, is expected to gain market share during the forecast period owing to the presence of patient awareness, rapidly improving healthcare infrastructure, and rising healthcare expenditure levels in the emerging markets. These markets include the developing economies of China and India.

Ranking the Top Biotech Countries:

The United States ranks first in the number of biotech firms, PCT patent applications, and biomedical treatment approvals, with Spain coming second, according to the 2015 OECD report on biotechnology statistics. According to the report, the U.S. has 11,367 biotech firms followed by 2,831 in Spain and 1,950 in France.

They are followed by Korea, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Belgium rounding out the Top 10.

Small biotech firms are the rule rather than the exception, with 72 percent of the biotechnology firms in the United States having 50 or fewer employees.

Ranking by Total Biotechnology R&D Expenditures:

The number of firms is one way to rank biotech by country, while expenditures in research and development are another. The United States outspends its nearest competitor, France, by eight to one, at almost $27 billion to a little over $3 billion in 2012. The other big spenders are Switzerland, Korea, Japan, Germany, and Denmark at all over one billion dollars.
